In the United States, cement is made by crushing limestone in a press, blasting it with high-pressure water, and then mixing it with a mix of other materials.
But here in Canada, the process is done in an old-fashioned cement factory, where the limestone is heated to 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit, then crushed and pressed.
The limestone is poured into a large oven and then heated, and finally crushed.
The resulting mixture is then poured into the concrete for a concrete mix, which is then mixed with the limestone to form a final mix.
The process is not very expensive, at $10 to $15 per cubic foot, and the result is a mix that is very resistant to weathering, says Michael Sivak, senior vice president of product development at Gritco.
“This is a great, versatile material,” he says.
“Cement is durable and can last years.”
GritCo’s cement-mixer is designed to work in a variety of environments.
In areas with a lot of surface runoff, such as in the South, the mix will be very flexible, says Sivac, who expects the product to be available in stores in early 2019.
“The mix is much easier to mix than limestone,” he adds.
Sivok says the mix can be mixed with other materials such as gravel, asphalt, sand, and clay.
He adds that it’s not a hard mix, and it can be used for concrete projects that are not intended to be used in concrete, such in parking lots and driveways.
Sivelles, of the Canadian Association of Steel Makers, says that in a concrete-mixing facility, there are often other types of products available, such a concrete filler, which mixes with a water-based solution and is then treated with sand or concrete.
But he says the cement-plus-cement mix has advantages over other mixes.
“A lot of these mixes are not meant to be mixed,” he explains.
“They’re meant to have a specific purpose, like a cementer.”
Gutter, a Canadian firm that specializes in cementing, also uses a mix made from cement and limestone.
“We’re also using cement mix in our asphalt and gravel mix,” says Robyn Smith, a Gutter spokeswoman.
“These are all made from limestone, which has a different texture than concrete.
The lime is very soft and will hold up to weather well.”
She says the company is using the mix in its asphalt and in its gravel mix.
“It’s very, very versatile,” Smith adds.
“If you have a need for concrete mix in an asphalt-gridded parking lot, or if you need to mix a cemented driveway or a cementing pad in your home, this mix will do it.”
Smith says that because the mix is made from a mixture of limestone and cement, it can hold up for decades, which helps protect the concrete mix.
But she also cautions that some customers might not be happy about using the cement mix on a concrete project, because they may want to add a coating of a more expensive material, such concrete or asphalt, on top.
In general, she says, it’s best to avoid mixing cement or limestone with other types, as they are very expensive and might not hold up.
“You might need to use a combination of cement, lime, and concrete,” Smith says.
The company sells a mix called T-2 cement that is a combination mix of limestone, sand and lime.
“T-2 is one of our best-selling mixes,” says Sivek.
“There’s a lot more lime than cement.”
Sivakov says GritCO’s cement mixes are made in the U.S., but the company will be expanding its operations in Canada to provide more products, including cement for concrete in parking lot and garage projects.
