Portland, Oregon—For months, cement trucks have been circling the city of Portland carrying the stuff from the White Portland cement factory to the city’s downtown.
The trucks are a bit more expensive than the city would pay to build a new concrete building in downtown Portland, but it’s not as much of a problem as you might think.
“It’s definitely not as bad as people think,” says David Miller, the city council member for Southwest Portland who voted for the trucks last year.
“People get really excited when they hear a truck is going to deliver a concrete block.
And it’s great for people.”
Miller is not alone.
“We were a little bit surprised by it because there were a lot of people who were really excited to hear it, and then we realized, ‘Wow, that’s a lot more than the average person would be getting,'” he says.
And that was a bit of a shock to people, who are accustomed to a lot less of a commute to work.
That’s why the trucks have gotten so popular.
In May, the Portland Development Commission approved a request from the company behind the trucks for up to 30 new jobs in the city.
Miller says the trucks would be delivered from Portland’s new Downtown Eastside Development Center, the first new concrete buildings to be built downtown in 25 years.
“This is the first time since the 1980s that we’ve had a new building built downtown,” he says, referring to the historic downtown block that’s being renovated.
The city’s development office says the new concrete facility will create about 1,000 construction jobs and 1,400 permanent ones, and that the project will add about $15 million to the economy over its first decade of operation.
The company, called Cement Delivery, says the city is already seeing a huge economic boost, too.
“The new concrete construction project in Portland will have a major impact on our economy and the city,” the company says in a statement.
“Cement Delivery has a long history of delivering concrete, including over 25 years in the U.S. and a decade of delivering cement to Portland, Maine.
We look forward to working with our Portland counterparts to achieve the same result.”
Miller says he hopes the new truck drivers will be able to make the drive into downtown Portland.
“There are so many people working, and it would be great to see more people work,” he adds.
Cement delivery trucks are coming to Portland.
Portland isn’t the only city that’s looking to get a lot easier commuting.
“Portland’s a very walkable city, so it’s easy for people to walk and do some shopping, and if we don’t have a lot people walking, then we’re not going to have that many people,” says James Gifford, the director of the city agency that manages the city parks department.
“But it’s also just a really walkable place to work and live.
People don’t really want to walk a lot to get around the city, because it’s very difficult to get from place to place, and there are a lot fewer cars and lots of trucks.”
The new concrete jobs are part of a new program called the Portland Growth Initiative, which has a goal of expanding and diversifying the citys population through more affordable housing and better transportation.
In 2018, Portland added more than 100,000 people to the population, which is projected to hit 2 million by 2030.
The initiative has been expanding since 2011.
Now, the department is looking to add another 5,000 new jobs, or 5,700 permanent ones.
The new jobs will be created by either hiring new construction workers or moving the existing workforce to the new buildings.
And the city expects to create a total of 3,800 new permanent construction jobs in its first year of operation, Giffard says.
The department has been working on this program for years, and the plan is to eventually create at least a million new jobs.
“A lot of this growth is going towards improving the cityscape, which means getting people out of their cars and getting people to work,” Giffords says.
“When you’re building a house, you’re really trying to make it as walkable as possible.
When you’re driving, you have to be able do some of those things.”
The project is one of a number of efforts the city has undertaken to try to get people to leave their cars at home.
And to that end, the council last year approved a proposal that will allow Portland to hire a contractor to build more pedestrian bridges in order to get more people off the street.
A lot of these projects are funded by a combination of federal grants, private donations, and tax revenue.
So far, the initiative has gotten about $1.8 million in state and federal money to do work on pedestrian bridges, according to the council.
And there’s been a lot in the works to increase transportation options for people
